Grizzly bears and black bears
are commonly seen along the Inside Passage and the area of
the B.C. mainland opposite Vancouver Island. There are NO
grizzlies on Vancouver Island, but black bears can often
be seen, especially in the more remote areas.
The sheltered coves of the mainland are good places to view
grizzlies from the shore. At Knight Inlet on the Inside Passage,
there are lodges where you can view the bears from platforms
specially designed for bear watching.
The best times to see bears are the spring, when they come
out of hibernation, or the fall, when they are gorging themselves
on the spawning salmon at the mouths of the rivers.
The wildlife naturalists on these trips are well-informed
professionals. Of the utmost importance are safety for clients,
and respect for the bears in their natural habitat.
