When the white man first arrived
on the shores of Nootka Sound in 1778, the First Nations
people, who had lived here on Vancouver Island for thousands
of years, were already deeply centred in their powerful art
and enthralling legends. First Nations art is now more popular
and appreciated than ever before.
Exploring the world of First Nations culture is a wonderful
spiritual experience, and as we share it, we must be respectful
towards cultural sensitivities and sacred areas. Indigenous
communities throughout Vancouver Island are welcoming visitors
to learn from them, through cultural centres, historic sites,
and art galleries, and offering tours and special events.

The history of local indigenous
peoples is featured in several museums, and it is sometimes
possible to visit talented First Nations artists at their
galleries or carving workshops. Imagine purchasing carvings
and artwork directly from their creator!
The Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria has probably
the best permanent exhibits of aboriginal history, with a
large collection of artefacts including argillite and ancient
totems. A visit there is a must for any visitor to Vancouver
Island! |
